There are always instances where you did good, and many where you took everything down with you. From being naïve, to a control freak, to someone with anger issues, life can’t be described in one word. And that’s okay.

Sometimes you already feel like crying, without exactly knowing why. Probably because what’s coming ahead feels overwhelming, and you don’t want that to happen. Significant or not, the past is important—for learning, for cherishing, for becoming better.

If you have better people around, a loving family, a good place to be, and things mostly favourable, hold on to that. What matters is focusing on that one thing that makes your existence all the more worth it.

What you should keep close is faith in yourself, more than your destiny. Destiny will take you wherever you keep your faith.

Enjoy life. You’ve probably been stringent with that. So form a balance, complete your task, and then enjoy, have fun. Life is supposed to be like that. Be patient with the process, but develop consistency.

Aging feels heavy because it comes with responsibility. You can either make it or break it. My advice: Choose the former.

Like if you’re a control freak like myself, know that it brings out the planning aspect in you. It’s cool that you’re one to take the initiative(s) and execute them finely. But understand it is okay to not freak out for the lack of plan(s) at times. Life would not go according to your plan. It is all the more beyond your imagination. You can’t possibly plan any and everything. So chill if and when you do not have a plan prior to something unexpected coming up. You’d handle it just fine. Breathe and go ahead.

If you’re a giver, try keeping yourself before others. You only can live your life to the fullest, you can only help yourself first (remember the airplane rule?); others will eventually take care of their own. The idea is to be there for people, but not on the condition of your own neglect. It won’t be worth it.

Read more, learn more, and explore more. Get fascinated more. Cry more, and then stand up more. Appreciate yourself and whatever you have in life more. Remember, you don’t need social acceptance for patting your own back. Be proud of what the process makes of you.

You’re gonna be fine. You can change the world or just yourself tonight. Choice is yours.

हर ऑर्गेनाइज़ेशन में दो तरीक़े के लोग होते हैं, एक, जो काम केवल काम करने के लिए करते हैं, और दूसरे, जो काम बनाने के लिए, बेहतरी के लिए करते हैं। बात ये है कि पापा दूसरी केटेगरी में आते हैं। उन्हें अपने काम से प्रेम है। उन्हें काम करना बेहद पसंद है, अब वो चाहे ऑफिस संबंधी काम हो या मंदिर के निर्माण का, किसी को सलाह देनी हो या सोशल मीडिया पर अप-टू-डेट रहना। ज़ाहिर है वो व्यस्त रहते हैं, इतना कि उनके पास हमें लिए देने के लिए समय कम ही बचता है।

धीरे धीरे जैसे उम्र होती दिख रही है, हम बड़े हो रहे हैं, छोटे छोटे तरीक़ों से हम समय निकाल लिया करते हैं, अब भले वो पापा को ऑफिस से घर लाने का बहाना हो, या साथ बैठ थोड़ा न्यूज़ देख लेना, नाश्ता करने सुबह सुबह 7 किमी दूर जाना हो या दो पल छत पर उनके साथ टहल लेना।

पापा हमेशा से काफ़ी ऐक्टिव रहे हैं, उनका मानना है कि आपको सब कुछ आना चाहिए, अब वो छोटे से छोटा काम हो या बड़े से बड़ा- ऑफिस का काम हो या घर का। कौन मानेगा की मुझे रोटी बनाना मेरे पापा ने सिखाया? वे कहते हैं कि आप जो काम करो, मन से करो। यहाँ से आती है इच्छाशक्ति और जिज्ञासा। यह कहना सही है कि वो मेरे आदर्श हैं, और मैं उन्हीं से सीखती आयी हूँ। आज मैं जिस भी ऑर्गेनाइज़ेशन का पार्ट बनती हूँ, मेरी कोशिश होती है कि मैं उसे पहले से बेहतर बना पाऊँ।

माँ से अगर मुझे करुणा और सहानुभूति मिली है तो पिता से मिली है मुझे उत्सुकता, नेतृत्व कौशल और लर्नर्स एटीट्यूड। मैंने उनसे सीखा है कि आपके पास बदलाव लाने के अवसर हमेशा होते हैं, उसके लिए कोई विशिष्ट पद की आवश्यकता नहीं है। मज़ाक़ मज़ाक़ में ही सही, पापा अपनी तारीफ़ ख़ुद कर दिया करते हैं, और वही मैं भी करती हूँ। लोगों को अटपटा लग सकता है पर इसके पीछे का संदर्भ इतना ही है बस कि आप अपने चीयरलीडर बनें, दूसरे लोग जब तारीफ़ करेंगे तब करेंगे, आप अपने आप को तो रिकॉग्निज़ करें।

मुझे साहस माँ से मिला है और भावुकता पिता से। संतोष, विवेक, कुशलता, रचनात्मकता, उत्सुकता – इन सब का एक खूबसूरत ब्लेंड हैं मेरे पिता।

And as we proudly complete our 10th year of formation (Oct. 2nd, just around the corner!), this year in particular, we’ve been targeting ways to amplify our impact. A special highlight was EmpowerWP Bhopal (Women’s Day event), where we hosted women in different stages & walks of their lives and demonstrated how WordPress & the community can support them in achieving/expanding their potential. The response was heartwarming.

Post this event’s success, and that of last year’s do_action, where we empowered NGOs by building their websites, it felt only natural that the next chapter in our mission of empowering society should focus on the students. 

And honestly, why we feel more drawn towards the student community can be traced back to the fact that the genesis of the WP Bhopal community itself was by a second-year college student back in 2015. Ever since, we’ve been taking workshops in colleges of our city, but this year, it was more about formalising it and making it more impactful & grander than ever.

Being the only active chapter in the State of Madhya Pradesh—a state with 55 districts and over 400 cities—there has always been a push to take our initiative beyond our home, Bhopal.

I still vividly remember while pitching sponsors for WordCamp Bhopal 2023, the idea kept resurfacing: the student community must benefit from this. The lack of exposure and the gap between theory & practical skills is profusely felt. Aditya often mentions that when he started with WordPress, it was purely out of his own interest, not something taught or exposed to him in his institute. For him, building websites was uncommon among his batchmates. And the truth is, the situation hasn’t changed, and we still need revitalisation to help the youth realise their potential. This became the agenda of this initiative.

Too much foundation-building… now’s the time to reveal what I’ve so heartily been tucking in…

We are so proud & delighted to share that possibly the biggest event of our community, benefitting 1700+ students in one go, has been wrapped successfully — The WP Build Tour 2025!

What’s in the Name? And Why This Matters.

The name came after much thought. We wanted it to reflect the core idea: Tour to capture the essence of a tour bus going around the State, empowering students (especially first-timers) to Build their very first WordPress websites, apart from expanding their technical confidence.

The mission was rooted in our identity as the only active WP chapter in Madhya Pradesh:

• Expanding our reach to more students across the State.
• Spreading WordPress awareness to inspire new local chapters
• Giving students confidence to bring their ideas online

This plan was a win-win for the community, for us personally and for the social cause we stand for.

The Planning Phase: How Did We Pull This Off?

The initial plan was to cover colleges in major cities. Ties with GDG (Google Developer Groups) communities and college clubs helped spread the word and support with arrangements that differed from college to college.

Interests were called in from colleges. Once we had a number, like the location, student profiles, number of students, etc, we initiated the process. We designated volunteers from each college to act as a bridge, because, of course, they know the best way in there. Each college had between 120-600 students in one sitting.

Thanks to their support, we were able to pull this off smoothly. Special shout-outs to: SIRT Student Body (Bhopal), Advance Studies Club- Medicaps Indore, GDG Indore & E-Cell, SATI Vidisha.

Sessions were designed for all levels, no matter the technical background. We were conscious of common hurdles & from day zero of planning, we decided to remove those barriers at first instance. In this regard, at preliminary registration itself, students were guided to apply for the GitHub Education Pack, so by the event day, they have access to free domains & developer tools. For hosting, we relied on InfinityFree and FreeHosting.com. Sometimes, a challenge was GitHub taking too long to approve the account(s), so the backup was to manage through subdomains and additional free hosting setups.

The setup also included swags and refreshments to keep up with the momentum. Thought was put into keeping those as relevant as possible. Participants were provided with mini cleaning kits to take home. For refreshments, we relied on the quick & easy- Pizzas, Burgers & beverages.

Building Website in a Day: The Possibility

Now that’s a given, building your own website (properly) takes time— planning, ideation, resources, so what’s the catch? No catch, really. Here, with a 4–5 hour workshop, we wanted students to experience the confidence of: “I can actually do this.” The pressure wasn’t to build the whole of it in one day but to cover all the basics then & there. So later, only the refining work remains.

From purchasing a domain, to pointing DNS records, to watching DNS propagation happen live—and finally installing WordPress & start—it was a crash course in turning abstract concepts into real, working websites.

And the output? A portfolio, a blog, a project showcase, even startup ideas. The pride was real. Social media lit up with links saying, “We built this.”

Honestly, we were a little sceptical at times—like when there weren’t many doubts, or when lunch was announced and students walked out. We wondered if they’d even come back. Because this wasn’t meant to be just another attendance exercise, we wanted it to be voluntary, something they chose to be part of.

But there was consensus in the team that even if just one kid shows up, we’ll keep going. And guess what? Not only did they come back, they jumped in with full energy. Doubts, queries, ideas, thoughts—their enthusiasm blew us away. It’s hard to put into words how fascinating it was to see the effort actually paying off. By the end, every participant had not just knowledge but something concrete: a live website, their website! Photos, reels, and hashtags like #WPBuildTourBPL amplified the energy far beyond the classrooms.

Beyond the Website

Though the primary goal was to help students build their own websites from scratch, the sessions were also designed to introduce them to the WordPress community. They covered career opportunities, ways to get involved, and the benefits the community offers. Students were given an overview of how to contribute, how chapters operate, and how they can become a part of the ecosystem. The aim was to make the experience not just hands-on but also empowering—equipping them to pave their own path, with community connection as a strong starting point. This also supports our broader goal of fostering new chapters across the state.

The Route We Took

We’re very thankful to the college administrations of each institute we took the Tour to for their trust and support throughout. This post would be failing in its agenda without giving them due credit for opening their doors and believing in the vision of the WP Build Tour.

On the ground, Shashank, Kapil, and Shivam held things together—guiding students through technicalities, taking charge of arrangements, managing logistics, and even stepping in as resource persons when needed.

Aditya, Guneet, and Kripesh led as resource persons, bringing not only their WordPress expertise but also their effortless way of connecting with students. (Classic engineers with their own fanbase, haha!)

Organising events is one thing, and adding purpose to them takes it to another level. For us in Bhopal, organising events has never been just about the “event.” It’s about going a step further and sparking change, no matter how small. Thankfully, the WordPress community has always been open and kind enough to welcome such ideas and encourage us to push boundaries. And for that, we’re so grateful!

The WP Build Tour 2025 wasn’t the end but rather the beginning of a movement. And as we now look forward to WordCamp Bhopal 2025 this December, we carry with us 1,700 sparks of possibility, ready to light up the future of WordPress and beyond.

How WordPress Community Helps You: Scholarships, Grants & Support Programs

Out of nowhere, I heard whispers of WordCamp Pokhara (WCPokhara) 2025. And just like that, something stirred again. I had no plans—but this one felt like it had plans for me.

This marked my second international trip, right after WordCamp Asia, and what a ride it was! Hosted in the breathtaking lakeside city of Pokhara, Nepal—it didn’t feel like a formal event trip. It felt like a reunion of kindred spirits.

What Am I Doing Here?

Yes, that was literally the title of my talk.

As someone who calls herself a product of the WordPress community but ultimately I am an outsider in a community that’s primarily tech-driven, I felt a strong urge to voice that duality which comes both with its pros and cons. So when I had the privilege of being at both sides, why not support individuals who are in the midst too? My session was in the Macchapucchre hall at Pokhara Event Centre (remember the name till the end of this article!)*

I spoke about community, support, diversity, inclusion, and the unseen ways the community shapes us. It’s not just about us giving back—it’s also about acknowledging how much we’ve received. I also shared what we’ve been doing in the WordPress Bhopal community—because I believe growing a local community is directly tied to the broader mission of societal growth.

Contributor Day — Where It Begins

Ever since I landed, I found myself looking for that sense of community everywhere but nah, not in my charts till the Camp. Day 1 kicked off with Contributor Day, buzzing with energy. I joined the Patterns team, and, like always, it felt grounding to sit across from passionate strangers-turned-collaborators and contribute to something bigger than ourselves. There also was a WordPress Basics workshop arranged, an energizing space for newcomers to begin their journey. Pretty thoughtful of the organisers in their scheme to build the next gen, it’s like acknowledging the younger population particularly and working for their need.

The numbers speak for themselves—678+ attendees, 35% women participation, and a speaker lineup filled mostly with women. We’re building a future that’s inclusive by default, and seeing it unfold in real-time was powerful.

What is worth mentioning? The students. So many of them! Curious minds, high on energy, and wide-eyed excitement. That is what community-building is—bridging the gap between where we are and where they want to go. WordPress gave us a platform; WordCamps like Pokhara make sure we pay it forward.

Faces Behind the Moments

WordPress events are rightly known for its networking opportunities, no doubt about it. Meeting Mumtahina Faguni and her lovely family, being introduced to Alina Kakshapati, crossing paths with Jyoti, Sapana, Prabeen, Regan, Utsav Dai, Ayush, Manjil, Sushant and so many more—each connection added a story to my journey. I clicked with Jyoti instantly, what started as a girls’ girl thing, led us to creating joyful nuisance as if we’d been best of friends for years— wonderwoman!

A long-overdue in-person meeting with Yam Chettri, who once mentored us at WP Bhopal, finally happened. And thanks to Subash Dai, I got a beautiful glimpse into his village and the landscapes beyond the Camp.

Everyone I met was so cordial, kind, and full of cheer, this is what makes WordPress more than software. It’s a movement.

Beyond the Camp

This was my first visit to Nepal, and I had the chance to explore both Kathmandu and Pokhara—each with its own flavour and stories.

We visited iconic places like Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, Boudhanath, Fewa Lake, Devi’s Fall, and a very cloudy Sunrise Point in Pokhara (sadly, no sunrise or peek of the mountain, just dramatic clouds!). Special mention to their cars!

While Pashupatinath is a marvel in scale and significance, I couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed by its lack of upkeep. A site so historically rich and spiritually revered deserves more thoughtful maintenance. The contrast between its grandeur and the surrounding neglect was hard to ignore. It made me think about how we sometimes take our own heritage for granted, something I hope changes with time and awareness.

I also tried finding a Jain temple, there was only one in Kathmandu and none in Pokhara. I visited the one in Kathmandu during a layover, it was a two-storey building, housing both Digambar and Shwetambar shrines, one above the other. Simple, quiet, and tucked away.

Being a pure vegetarian, food was another small challenge. Compared to my experience in the Philippines, where chain restaurants were pretty thoughtful with food preferences, Nepal was trickier. For instance, I had to stop a server at my hotel from using the same tongs for non-veg and veg dishes, something that could easily go unnoticed. A small thing maybe, but for someone with my kind of dietary restrictions, it’s a big deal. My mum had insisted on packing some home-cooked food before the trip—and as always, mothers know best. Lesson learnt.

That said, we explored some great cafes too. My favourite was Pizza from Himalayan Java in Kathmandu. And next time, I‘m visit Utpala Café, run by monks. It’s on my wish list now.

When the Mountains Finally Whispered Hello

The mountains, I must say, were teasing us throughout the trip—playing hide and seek behind thick clouds and fog. We kept waiting, hoping, peeking out of windows and into skies, but Pokhara remained mostly overcast.

Then, just when we had almost given up—as we were leaving for the airport—there it was.

Annapurna. Machhapuchchhre.
Majestic. Serene. Suddenly visible like a blessing.

We spotted a glimpse from our hotel too and instantly went gaga—squealing like little kids seeing something we’d only heard about in stories. It felt like Pokhara had saved its most magical moment for the very end. A perfect, quiet farewell.

Why It Mattered

More than the schedule, the venue, or even the amazing sessions; WordCamps are about the people.

It’s the chai breaks, the impromptu laughter, the smiles exchanged between sessions that stay with you. The shared spirit of belonging. Pokhara reminded me of Bhopal in many ways, except for the mountains, of course.

This time, I wasn’t just carried by the community’s support, I felt ready to give back, to cheer others on, to help hold that space of warmth for someone else.

I didn’t go looking for a community this time. But by the end of it, I knew—I belong here.

If you’ve ever been in that situation, you know how frustrating, helpless, and even violated it can feel. Having a blog since I was a 9th grader, it was certainly one of the biggest fears that somebody might rob my work and name it there’s. I had a good time thinking about probable solutions to implement, including getting my poetries copyrighted by some digitial agency; only to later realise that such content is already covered under copyright. It was about credit yes, but also respect for your time, creativity, and effort.

I didn’t know better but now that I do, let’s address the elephant in the room: what can you do? How do you protect your content? Where do you report it? And most importantly: Will anyone even listen?

Let’s talk about the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)—a powerful tool that might just be your best ally.

What is the DMCA?

The DMCA, or Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is a U.S. law passed in 1998 that gives creators a way to quickly remove copyright-infringing content from the internet—without needing to go through a full-blown legal battle.

Even though it’s a U.S. law, platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, WordPress, and major hosting providers worldwide follow DMCA protocols because they operate globally. So yes, even if you’re in India or anywhere else, you can still use the DMCA if your content is misused on a platform that complies with it. What matters is where the content is hosted, not where the copyright owner lives. Good news: most major platforms (even international ones) honour DMCA requests, even if they aren’t legally required to.

Interestingly, Indian courts have also echoed some of these protective measures. For instance, in Dept. of Electronics & IT vs Star India Pvt Ltd (2016), the Delhi High Court allowed blanket blocking of websites, not just specific URLs, to prevent piracy—something that aligns well with the DMCA’s broad takedown power. Similarly, in Kent Systems Ltd & Ors. v. Amit Kotak (2017), the court clarified that once notified, intermediaries like hosting platforms must act, reinforcing the idea of shared responsibility online.

What Does DMCA Cover?

The DMCA applies to most types of digital content, including:

• Text (blog posts, articles, eBooks, PDFs)
• Images (photos, illustrations, infographics)
• Videos (YouTube content, tutorials, reels)
• Audio and music files
• Software and code

It’s a straightforward takedown mechanism, allowing you to request the removal of stolen content from websites, search engines, or hosting servers.

Step-by-Step: What To Do If Your Content Is Stolen

1. Stay Calm and Gather Proof

Before rushing to react, take a moment. You’ll need:

• Screenshots of the stolen content
• URLs of both your original and the infringing post
• Dates showing when you published your content and when you found the infringement

This proof will be crucial if you end up filing a takedown request.

2. Look for Clear Signs of Infringement

Direct copying of text, images, or media without permission

Minor edits that don’t qualify as fair use under Section 52 of the Indian Copyright Act 1957

Removal of watermarks or attribution

Try Reaching Out First

You can politely message the infringing user or site, explaining:

• Who you are
• That you own the content
• A link to your original work
• A link to the copied version
• A deadline (like 7 days) to remove it
• That you want to resolve the issue amicably

Sometimes, this is enough. If not, move on to filing a DMCA takedown notice.

How To File a DMCA Takedown Notice

Step 1: Identify the Hosting Provider

Use tools like WhoIsHosting or HostingChecker to find where the website is hosted. If the site is behind Cloudflare, you can still submit your complaint through Cloudflare’s abuse form, and they’ll forward it.

Step 2: Draft Your Takedown Notice

There are a few basics to keep in mind while prepping your takedown notice. This includes your key information, which can be utilised if the recipient wants to contact you. Include the following:

• Your full name and contact information
• The link to your original content
• The link to the infringing content
• A Statement of Good Faith that you did not authorise this usage
• A Statement of Accuracy that confirms your claim is truthful under penalty of perjury

Step 3: Submit to the Platform

Once you’re done with all of this, it’s time to submit your complaint. Most major hosting providers and platforms have dedicated forms or email addresses specifically for this type of complaint.

• Cloudflare: Abuse Report Form
• Google Cloud Platform: Google Legal Troubleshooter
• DigitalOcean: Abuse Contact Form
• Linode: Contact Page
• Vultr: Abuse Contact

Step 4: Follow Up

Once you have submitted the complaint, wait for 3-5 business days, and if you do not receive any response, follow up. This also includes regularly checking to see if the infringing content has been removed. If the hosting provider doesn’t respond or takes too long, follow up with them or submit a complaint to search engines to have the content removed from search results.

Most takedown requests are resolved in 3–7 business days, though some platforms may take up to 30 days, especially in cases involving e-commerce. Follow up if you don’t receive a response. Even Indian courts have recognized that platforms can and should act when properly notified. In the recent X Corp v. Union of India (2023) case, the Karnataka High Court observed that entire user accounts may be blocked under Section 69a of the IT Act, similar in impact to DMCA’s wide takedown capabilities when there’s a clear violation.

Note: Keep all communications and records safely stored for future reference.

It’s also worth noting that in India, even if DMCA doesn’t directly apply, creators are not left unprotected. The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, framed under the IT Act, 2000, require digital platforms (intermediaries) to act on content takedown requests within 36 hours once they receive a complaint backed by appropriate evidence.

You can also rely on the Indian Copyright Act, 1957, which grants you exclusive rights to your original work, whether it’s a photo, article, video, or design. If infringed, you’re entitled to seek civil remedies like injunctions and damages, and even criminal penalties in serious cases.

So even if you’re not using the DMCA route, Indian law offers strong protections—especially when combined with proper documentation and prompt reporting.

What If You Receive a DMCA Notice?

If you’ve been accused of infringement, don’t panic. You have three options:

Option A: Remove the Content

If you agree that it infringes someone else’s copyright, take it down.

Option B: Modify It

You can tweak the content to comply with copyright rules, like giving attribution or using less of the original.

Option C: File a Counter-Notice

If the takedown is mistaken or you believe you own the rights, submit a counter-notice.

This must include:

• Your contact details
• What was taken down and where was it
• A statement of good faith belief that it was a mistake
• Your consent to jurisdiction
• Your electronic or physical signature

Once filed, the original complainant has 10 business days to take legal action. If they don’t, your content may be restored.

In the landmark U.S. case Lenz v. Universal Music Corp. (2015), the court ruled that copyright holders must consider fair use before sending a takedown notice. This is crucial for creators using content for commentary, education, parody, or criticism.

It’s safest to wait the entire period before reinstating content, even if the takedown notice is false. However, you can still request your provider to do so depending on the details of your situation.

DMCA is not just a law, it’s a tool for creators. In a world where content spreads like wildfire, understanding your rights is more than a legal luxury, it’s a digital necessity. Whether you’re an influencer, a blogger, a designer, or a developer, don’t let content theft slide. Start small: Learn. Document. Act. And if it ever happens to you again, remember—you’re not powerless. You’re protected.

The truth is, flagship WordCamps can be hard to get to—not because of the ticket price (WordCamps are known for being affordable), but because of everything else: travel, accommodation, visas, time away from work or personal responsibilities, and so on. Many attendees are supported by their companies or organizations; some manage to make it on their own. And then, there are scholarships and sponsorships—lifelines that can make the difference between wishing and attending.

This blog post is a small effort to shed light on the many ways the WordPress community helps people show up.

Before I dive into the list, I want to take a moment to thank the individuals, companies, and community efforts that make it possible for folks (including me) to experience such splendid events. WordCamp Asia 2025 was a feeling, something that wouldn’t be possible for me to attend the way I did, without their support, and I’m deeply, wholeheartedly grateful. Yoast is primarily a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) plugin, but it’s really much more than that. A wonderful yet specific initiative by Yoast on the lines of the ethos of inclusivity.

If you’re speaking at an event happening anywhere on your continent and are part of a typically underrepresented group, apply for the Yoast Diversity Fund. They offer up to €1,500 per event to cover travel and accommodation expenses. Requirements:

• The conference is in the same continent as you reside in

I started my blogging journey almost a decade back with WordPress, and over time, I became part of the WordPress community. Since then, I’ve built at least five websites for different purposes, constantly learning along the way. What I realized, though, is that many people, even those already in the system, struggle with the basics. And that’s okay! I’ve been there too, but thankfully, I had people to support me. And I’d like to be one for you!

So if you’re from a non-tech background like me, or even if you’re tech-savvy but feeling stuck when it comes to building a portfolio website, you’re in the right place. Let’s break it down into simple steps to get your WordPress site up and running with minimal fuss.

Before We Begin: Make sure you have your domain and hosting ready. Once that’s sorted and you’ve logged into your WordPress account, we’re all set to start building!

Go to the backend of your website by adding /wp-admin to your WordPress site URL. So, if your domain is example.com, go to example.com/wp-admin and log in.

Step 1: Install Essential Plugins

To make things easier, we’ll install some essential plugins. These will help speed up the process and make customization smoother.

• Starter Templates – Provides pre-designed layouts.
• Elementor – A drag-and-drop page builder for easy design.

I personally prefer the WordPress’ built-in Gutenberg editor, if you’d like to try your hands on it, you can skip Elementor for now.

• WP Forms – A simple form builder for contact forms.
• For SEO, Yoast & RankMath are top tiers, choose any.

To install them, go to Dashboard → look left-hand side Plugins → Add New, search for each plugin, then click Install Now → Activate. Done!

Step 2: Choose a Starter Template

Building from scratch is all cool, but let’s try using the available resources first (which are fantastic & cater a variety of requirements). We’d go with a Starter Template to speed things up.

1. Go to Appearance → Starter Templates.
2. Browse and choose a portfolio template that fits your style.
3. Click Import to bring it to your site.

Some great free templates: Astra, Bravada, Kalium. Always check the live preview before selecting one.

Step 3: Customize Your Template with Gutenberg

Now, let’s make this website truly yours!

1. Go to Pages → All Pages, find your homepage, and click Edit.
2. Use blocks to add or edit content:
   • Paragraph Block for text Image Block to upload pictures
   • Tip: Upload pictures first to the media library and then select from there. This saves space and keeps your site organized. Columns Block to create layouts
   • Tip: If you want to create a collage or display multiple images together, first add a column block, then insert 2–3 columns inside it and upload images. This simple hack makes it easier to align images, adjust background colors, and experiment with different layouts. Cover Block for stylish hero sections
3. Want to add a new section? Click the ‘+’ icon, choose a block, and start designing!
4. To add anchor links (e.g., ‘About’ or ‘Contact’), go to the Advanced settings of a block and enter a unique HTML anchor.
   • Tip: To add an anchor link for “About,” select the heading block, go to Advanced settings, and enter about-section in the HTML Anchor field. Then, link any button or text to #about-section, and clicking it will scroll to that section instantly!

Step 4: Add Key Features

A strong portfolio website isn’t just about design, it should showcase your work and make it easy to connect with you. Here’s what you need:

• About Page: Give an overview of who you are, what you’re looking for, and what visitors can expect from your website.
• Portfolio Section: Showcase your work with images, descriptions, or case studies.
• Services Section: List your services so visitors know exactly how you can help them.
• Client Testimonials: To add social proof, use the Testimonial block (from Essential Addons for Gutenberg) or a simple text block.
• Contact Form: Use WPForms to add a contact form in just a few clicks.
• Call to Action: Add a button block that links to your email, resume, or social media profiles.

Tip: When creating a services section, use icon blocks or columns to neatly display different offerings. This improves readability and keeps things visually appealing.

Tip: For testimonials, keep them short and impactful. If possible, add a small image of the client for credibility.

Step 5: Final Touches & Publishing

See the logo on this website’s tab? That’s called a favicon! Here’s how to add it, along with some final tweaks to your site’s branding.

I used frontend customization for all of the following. To do this, simply go to the uppermost layer on the dashboard, click Visit Site, and then hit Customize to start making changes. But if you’d prefer the backend way, follow these steps:

1. Adding a Logo & Website Icon (Favicon)

1. Go to Appearance → Customize → Site Identity.
2. Upload your logo and site icon (favicon).
3. Click Publish to save changes.
   A favicon is a small icon that appears in the browser tab beside your website name!

2. Editing Header & Footer

Header:

• Go to Appearance → Customize → Header (or Site Editor → Header if using a block theme).
• Edit your menu, logo, and header layout as needed.

Footer:

• Navigate to Appearance → Customize → Footer (or Site Editor → Footer).
• Add copyright text, social links, or a call-to-action.

If you’re using a block theme, you can edit both the header and footer directly in the Site Editor using blocks!

3. Click Preview to check for:

• Uniform font sizes and colors
• Buttons and links working properly
• Responsive design (looks good on mobile too!)

Once happy, click Publish!

Need to update something later? No worries! Just go back to the Dashboard → Edit → Update whenever you want.

We’ve all heard it—be the best parent you can be.

The one who provides, protects, plans. The one with the answers, the sacrifices. But somewhere along the way, in trying to be the best, did we forget what our children really need?

Let’s get this straight: your child doesn’t need the “best parent” with a trophy to prove it. They need a safe parent. A present parent. A human one.

We’re a generation trying to raise kids while healing from our own childhoods. A generation filled with unhealed wounds, trauma, and memories we rarely talk about. That’s why parenting has become such a loaded, sensitive topic. People joke about “new-age parenting,” roll their eyes at “gentle parenting,” or mock those trying to set emotional boundaries, but deep down, it’s coming from a place of wanting better. Of not wanting to repeat the same mistakes.

Be someone your child can come to—without hesitation, without fear, without overthinking how you might react. Being a parent isn’t just about getting them into the best school, paying their fees, buying them the best clothes, planning fancy trips, etc. Those are mere checkboxes. What matters more—what truly lasts—is the emotional support you give, the comfort you offer, and the safe space you create at home.

Don’t try to one-up other parents by comparing your sacrifices or playing the “at least I’m not like them” card. You’re not in competition. You’re raising a human being—a smaller version of yourself—who’s watching your every move to learn how to handle life. The world out there is already brutal; your child doesn’t need you to be another source of fear.

In India especially, conflict in a marriage is often “resolved” by having a child—as a suggestion from well-meaning but misguided relatives. Just like how some parents hand a crying kid a phone to keep them quiet, families hand over this “solution” in the hopes that it’ll silence deeper issues. But what no one talks about is the burden that child grows up with.

So what about the child?

Ask yourself—did you ever sit down and talk it out? Discuss how you’ll parent this child? What kind of values you’ll pass down? What behaviors are off-limits in front of them? How will you resolve conflicts when they arise, not just with your partner, but also with your kid?

You don’t just bring a baby into the world as a distraction from your own issues. A child is not a pause button. Not a fresh start. They’re a living, breathing individual who will grow up shaped by the very environment you give them. You can’t expect magic to happen just because there’s now a kid in the picture. If anything, that child will silently carry the weight of the unresolved conflicts you never dealt with.

These are the children who require therapy when they grow up. Because they don’t know what to do with their emotions, or whom to confide in. These are the ones who desperately try to find people outside the home to talk to—just anybody who seems kind—and we know even that sometimes doesn’t end well.

Your child looks up to YOU. You can’t expect them to be mature from day one. It is your job to teach them, guide them, and show them the way—not the school’s, not the society’s. It starts at home. It starts with you.

The bare minimum is for you to Listen.

Not to retaliate. Not to defend. Not to correct. But to understand. Children aren’t trying to argue with you; they’re trying to express themselves. All they have is their innocence, their curiosity. And if every word they say leads to a scolding or a fight, you’re not teaching discipline, you’re instilling fear.

That fear creeps into every corner of their life. It conditions them to expect rejection and blame, even at home. Even from you. So much so that, god forbid, when something horrible happens to them, they might just stay silent… because “what if you get angry?” “What if you blame them?”

Children Mirror What They See

There’s a saying—girls don’t want to become like their mothers, boys want to become like their fathers. And I can’t stress enough how true this statement is. Mothers want their daughters to grow up strong, independent, and financially free because they’ve seen what it’s like to live in a world where men dominate. The last thing these daughters need is to see that same behaviour in their own homes, in their own father, brothers or uncles.

No matter what you’ve done “for the family,” if you’re not there emotionally, the case rests right there. You don’t parent from ego. You don’t build fear. The world already has enough of that.

Don’t Build a Home They Want to Escape

Don’t create a home that your child is constantly trying to escape from. Don’t offer help like it’s a burden. Don’t make love conditional.

If they’re getting bad grades in school, you don’t go tell the teachers to remove them from extracurriculars. You sit with them. You try to understand where the gap is. You talk. You support. You listen. Assuming everything on your own doesn’t help.

What do you make of a child who is restricted from joining extracurriculars, is always the teacher’s pet, a first bencher, a good-to-average grader, doesn’t go out with friends, isn’t allowed on (unmonitored) trips, only wears what you approve of, always says no because that’s what they were conditioned to do? They grow up anxious. People pleasers. Easily Manipulated. Isolated. Unable to trust their own decisions. They say no to the world and even to themselves. Are they any good, for their own selves? Do you see an outlet? I hope you answer in negative.

Can you just… let them be?

Because in the end, it’s not your intentions, your sacrifices, or your status that shape your child’s life—it’s your behavior. If you can’t manage your own emotions, how can their first safe space, their home, ever feel whole?

Your child doesn’t care how much you earn or how many gifts you buy. They care about how safe they feel when they see you. About whether they can talk to you without judgment or not.

What you’ve gone through isn’t their fault but what you choose to pass down is indeed your responsibility.

So no, it’s not about being a perfect parent, the “best parent.” It’s about choosing to be a different one. The one who listens & believes in them. The one who holds space, not the one they dream of running away from.

I understand that everybody is trying to do their best, and that’s perfectly okay. It’s not like you learnt it too. Therefore, the idea is not to be the best—but to just be. No matter what level of parenting you’re in, even if your kids are already grown up, try inculcating the things mentioned above and see the results. It’s important—because however much one says or tells themselves to forgive, unhealed trauma is a reality. It stays. And one day, it may explode—and that won’t be the best way forward.

And truly, that’s not hard. That’s just being human with a thought. And you out of all, can do that for your child.

WordCamp Asia 2025 was held in Manila, Philippines, from February 20-22, marking my very first flagship WordCamp and my first international trip. For me, this experience was surreal—one for the books! I’ve spoken about WCAsia so much, to so many people, yet it always feels like it was worth even more. Everyone should experience something like this at least once.

I kept delaying this recap, trying to make it perfect, only to realize that it wasn’t quite possible. WordCamp Asia was an experience, deeply rooted in my heart yet so difficult to capture in words (or even in pictures). Beautiful, serene, overwhelming, exhilarating, and full of warmth, this event redefined my standards for conferences and, more importantly, for community—welcoming, inclusive, and just right.

The Journey to Manila

This trip was significant for many reasons, but mostly because I was emceeing for the first time at a flagship event. Although I received the Diversity Scholarship for WCAsia 2024, I couldn’t attend, making this year’s opportunity even more special.

But from visa applications to solo travel to finally making it there, it was a journey in itself! For Indian residents, the Philippines offers an eVisa option, making the process fairly accessible.

Visa was sorted, I flew to Mumbai first and had a friend bring Mumbai’s ultimate—Vada Pav before we flew to Manila. Being a vegetarian, food was one of my biggest concerns, and little did I know how much of a topsy-turvy journey I’d have to go further on.

Staying at Conrad Manila: Hospitality at Its Finest

After changing 3 flights and travelling for a full 24 hours, we landed in Manila! Literally kept myself up on lemon water throughout. The first thing that caught my eye was their beautiful cars! And then, we headed to the stunning Conrad Manila!

My standards for hospitality are set & shaped by the Tatas. In the Philippines, I stayed at Conrad, a Hilton property, and this became the only property that could come anywhere near the Taj. Mindful housekeeping, accommodating receptionists, and thoughtful longue staff— The level of hospitality I received made my stay so much more enjoyable and made me feel at home. Mindful hospitality goes a long way!

Filipinos, in general, are incredibly kind and accommodating—even the cab drivers!

Coming to food, considering its geography, Filipino cuisine revolves around seafood and poultry, making it tricky for vegetarians to navigate and find something without eggs, if alone meat. There may be hidden ingredients like fish or shrimp flakes, oyster sauce, chicken oil, rennet cheese, etc. And since rennet is banned in India, but not outside the Parmesan is different too. Fruits can be your best friends on such trips for real. Having done a lot of research, I was particular about my food throughout.

At Conrad, my only option on Day 1 was gluten bread. I shared my concern later that day, and starting Day 2, Chef Becca personally took charge of my meals, ensuring I had a variety of vegetarian options every morning. She even brought out a cheese platter at one point to verify the ingredients haha.

Every Saturday, they have a national-level fireworks competition at the Bay. You could actually see how populous the city is at this time. I was glad that we were around, and with my room facing the Bay, it was all the more lovely.

What is a WordCamp & Why is WCAsia special?

WordCamps are the flagship event(s) of WordPress, a software covering around 43% of websites around the globe. Primarily a tech conference, they are known for their diverse community and global outreach through local communities. They bring together enthusiasts, developers, designers, bloggers, business owners, etc to learn, network, and contribute. They hold global significance as hubs of innovation and collaboration within the WordPress community. They’re organised by local communities as well as global communities. The Global community organises three flagships WordCamps, these are continent-level Camps: WordCamp Europe, WordCamp US & WordCamp Asia.

WordCamp Asia 2025: The Main Event

Over 1,400 attendees from 71 countries gathered at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), with nearly 15,000 joining online. The event started with Contributor Day, followed by two days of insightful talks, panels, workshops, and networking opportunities.

As for me, the networking began right on the flight, my seatmate turned out to be headed to the Camp too and was an Indian (didn’t seem like prima facie though). The serendipity of it all set the tone for what was to come.

Contributor Day: Giving Back to the Community

WordCamp Asia kicked off with an incredible Contributor Day, with almost 800 contributors, many first-timers, coming together to collaborate and give back to WordPress. Guided by 37 table leads and 16 experts from the Human Library, participants engaged in meaningful discussions and tackled important tasks, reinforcing the open-source spirit of WordPress.

Post-Contributor Day, we headed to Social Night at Baluarte San Diego which had a cute setup for dinner for the speakers, sponsors, volunteers & organisers; followed by Elementor and Hostinger’s Manila Mingle Party.

Conference Highlights

The first full conference day began with opening remarks reflecting on WordCamp Asia’s journey, tracing back to the first Southeast Asian WordCamp in Manila in 2008. The excitement peaked with an inspiring keynote by Gutenberg Lead Architect Matías Ventura on the future of Gutenberg and WordPress. I’ve been a fan of Gutenberg for almost a decade since I started blogging.

I had the opportunity to emcee on Day 1—a nerve-wracking yet exhilarating experience. Practicing backstage, I made friends with Shubham who stayed to support me throughout—really sweet of him! I introduced some amazing speakers, including

• Nirmal Desai, CEO of CreedAlly, who spoke on Building a WordPress Agency
• Chiaki Kauno from Vektor Inc. shared insights on Essential Steps for WordPress Multilingual Success
• Dhanendran from 10up spoke about the Role of Microservices in Headless WordPress
• Abhishek Raijal from Awesome Motive shed light on Getting Started with WP Interactivity API

After-Hours Networking & Parties

The heart of a flagship WordCamp lies in networking and the crazy parties. People do island hopping in the Philippines, I found myself party-hopping instead.

The night continued with parties hosted by WooCommerce and Verisign. Gustė from Hostinger was really kind to invite me to their private dinner. This was followed by an impromptu plan with WPMU DEV’s- they’re so cool! The nightlife was something I’d never experienced—at 5 AM, the city of Manila was still alive, lights twinkling, and people socializing over at McD as if it were early evening! A city that never sleeps, witnessed, lived.

The Grand Finale & A Special Announcement

While I was packing for Asia I had this thought to do something Indian for once. Of course, I was to represent my country. Somewhere at the back of my mind, I considered wearing a saree. I was skeptical, but I packed one anyway, just in case I felt confident enough. So it was the final day of the conference and the final chance of me wearing it. Thanks to friends who motivated me further. It wasn’t the easiest choice, but it was absolutely thrilling! Loved every bit of it being noticed and appreciated by the global folks, right from the hotel staff to our neighbours, extending to the West, it was crazy.

Honestly, I’d been at the sponsor area throughout this day. There were so many raffles, it was all buzzing with energy. I spoke to so many people!

The Best Moment?

The announcement of WordCamp Asia 2026!

The excitement was palpable. After so much anticipation, countless rumours, and endless debates, the moment finally arrived—WordCamp Asia is coming to India in 2026! For the Indian WordPress community, this was nothing short of a full-circle moment.

To wrap it all up, the last party was at PICC itself: the After Party!

A special note of thanks to the incredible organizing team — putting together an event of this magnitude is no small feat. From coordinating speaker logistics to ensuring smooth operations across multiple tracks, their dedication truly shone through. Every detail was thoughtfully taken care of — whether it was the assistance with special immigration lines, the shuttle buses for our convenience, or the constant on-ground support, everything was impeccably managed. Kudos to the team for pulling off such a well-organized and heartwarming event. Your hard work is deeply appreciated!

The People, Always the People!

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it every single time—WordCamp has always felt like a big family reunion, even if you’re meeting people for the first time. It’s always about the people. I wanted to stay longer, explore more, talk more (even if it meant a sore throat!) and experience more of the country, but perhaps that’s for another time.

In all of this, how incomplete would it be to not mention the wonderful folks I got to meet—Michelle, Gustė from Hostinger, Samah from Yoast, Viktoria & Conodor from Kinsta, Devin, Hari Shanker, Tim, Eva, Arjay, Chiaki, Nirmal, Shubham, Krupa, Himal, Anooja & Vinod from Flexicloud, Napaphat, Vedanshu, Aurelio, Loana. The list is definitely longer… sorry if I’ve missed someone: you’re remembered with a smile nonetheless!

And then, there was the big, vibrant Indian contingent—some familiar faces, some new—and all adding to the warmth.

I’m a people person. My energy depends upon the people. And even as I write this, I know words will never fully capture what this experience meant to me. Some knew of my presence there; a majority did not. The ones I knew helped me connect with those I didn’t. But there were also those who came by without knowing me—just a smile or a kind word away, reminding me how simple yet profound human connections can be.

I’d recommend anyone to experience this community at least once!

What Did I Bring Back?

As I returned home, friends kept asking what I brought back for them. My answer? “A rejuvenated Astha.” (Apart from the sponsor swags of course).

And honestly, I couldn’t have said it better. This trip wasn’t just my first flagship WordCamp or my first international journey—it was a journey of self-growth, confidence, and belonging. It reminded me of the power of community, the impact of knowledge-sharing, and the beauty of stepping out of my comfort zone. The support, the kindness, the sheer joy of being in the moment—I carry it all with deep, wholehearted gratitude.

Thank you, WordCamp Asia, for the memories, the friendships, and the inspiration. Here’s to many more moments like these!
