WordPress Bhopal has been at the forefront when it comes to igniting young minds, empowering them with knowledge, generating new ways to achieve optimal and maximum value, and sparking a positive social impact— kind of feels like a motto.

We love doing all of it!

And as we proudly complete our 10th year of formation (Oct. 2nd, just around the corner!), this year in particular, we’ve been targeting ways to amplify our impact. A special highlight was EmpowerWP Bhopal (Women’s Day event), where we hosted women in different stages & walks of their lives and demonstrated how WordPress & the community can support them in achieving/expanding their potential. The response was heartwarming.

Read more about EmpowerWP Bhopal 2025

Post this event’s success, and that of last year’s do_action, where we empowered NGOs by building their websites, it felt only natural that the next chapter in our mission of empowering society should focus on the students.

And honestly, why we feel more drawn towards the student community can be traced back to the fact that the genesis of the WP Bhopal community itself was by a second-year college student back in 2015. Ever since, we’ve been taking workshops in colleges of our city, but this year, it was more about formalising it and making it more impactful & grander than ever.

Being the only active chapter in the State of Madhya Pradesh—a state with 55 districts and over 400 cities—there has always been a push to take our initiative beyond our home, Bhopal.

I still vividly remember while pitching sponsors for WordCamp Bhopal 2023, the idea kept resurfacing: the student community must benefit from this. The lack of exposure and the gap between theory & practical skills is profusely felt. Aditya often mentions that when he started with WordPress, it was purely out of his own interest, not something taught or exposed to him in his institute. For him, building websites was uncommon among his batchmates. And the truth is, the situation hasn’t changed, and we still need revitalisation to help the youth realise their potential. This became the agenda of this initiative.

Too much foundation-building… now’s the time to reveal what I’ve so heartily been tucking in…

We are so proud & delighted to share that possibly the biggest event of our community, benefitting 1700+ students in one go, has been wrapped successfully — The WP Build Tour 2025!

What’s in the Name? And Why This Matters.

The name came after much thought. We wanted it to reflect the core idea: Tour to capture the essence of a tour bus going around the State, empowering students (especially first-timers) to Build their very first WordPress websites, apart from expanding their technical confidence.

The mission was rooted in our identity as the only active WP chapter in Madhya Pradesh:

Expanding our reach to more students across the State.

Spreading WordPress awareness to inspire new local chapters

Giving students confidence to bring their ideas online

This plan was a win-win for the community, for us personally and for the social cause we stand for.

The Planning Phase: How Did We Pull This Off?

The initial plan was to cover colleges in major cities. Ties with GDG (Google Developer Groups) communities and college clubs helped spread the word and support with arrangements that differed from college to college.

Interests were called in from colleges. Once we had a number, like the location, student profiles, number of students, etc, we initiated the process. We designated volunteers from each college to act as a bridge, because, of course, they know the best way in there. Each college had between 120-600 students in one sitting.

Thanks to their support, we were able to pull this off smoothly. Special shout-outs to: SIRT Student Body (Bhopal), Advance Studies Club- Medicaps Indore, GDG Indore & E-Cell, SATI Vidisha.

Sessions were designed for all levels, no matter the technical background. We were conscious of common hurdles & from day zero of planning, we decided to remove those barriers at first instance. In this regard, at preliminary registration itself, students were guided to apply for the GitHub Education Pack, so by the event day, they have access to free domains & developer tools. For hosting, we relied on InfinityFree and FreeHosting.com. Sometimes, a challenge was GitHub taking too long to approve the account(s), so the backup was to manage through subdomains and additional free hosting setups.

The setup also included swags and refreshments to keep up with the momentum. Thought was put into keeping those as relevant as possible. Participants were provided with mini cleaning kits to take home. For refreshments, we relied on the quick & easy- Pizzas, Burgers & beverages.

Building Website in a Day: The Possibility

Now that’s a given, building your own website (properly) takes time— planning, ideation, resources, so what’s the catch? No catch, really. Here, with a 4–5 hour workshop, we wanted students to experience the confidence of: “I can actually do this.” The pressure wasn’t to build the whole of it in one day but to cover all the basics then & there. So later, only the refining work remains.

From purchasing a domain, to pointing DNS records, to watching DNS propagation happen live—and finally installing WordPress & start—it was a crash course in turning abstract concepts into real, working websites.

And the output? A portfolio, a blog, a project showcase, even startup ideas. The pride was real. Social media lit up with links saying, “We built this.”

Honestly, we were a little sceptical at times—like when there weren’t many doubts, or when lunch was announced and students walked out. We wondered if they’d even come back. Because this wasn’t meant to be just another attendance exercise, we wanted it to be voluntary, something they chose to be part of.

But there was consensus in the team that even if just one kid shows up, we’ll keep going. And guess what? Not only did they come back, they jumped in with full energy. Doubts, queries, ideas, thoughts—their enthusiasm blew us away. It’s hard to put into words how fascinating it was to see the effort actually paying off. By the end, every participant had not just knowledge but something concrete: a live website, their website! Photos, reels, and hashtags like #WPBuildTourBPL amplified the energy far beyond the classrooms.

Beyond the Website

Though the primary goal was to help students build their own websites from scratch, the sessions were also designed to introduce them to the WordPress community. They covered career opportunities, ways to get involved, and the benefits the community offers. Students were given an overview of how to contribute, how chapters operate, and how they can become a part of the ecosystem. The aim was to make the experience not just hands-on but also empowering—equipping them to pave their own path, with community connection as a strong starting point. This also supports our broader goal of fostering new chapters across the state.

The Route We Took

We’re very thankful to the college administrations of each institute we took the Tour to for their trust and support throughout. This post would be failing in its agenda without giving them due credit for opening their doors and believing in the vision of the WP Build Tour.

Here’s where the Tour travelled:

Each stop added its own flavour and warmth. If we could’ve squeezed in more, we surely would have, but even with the stretch, it was worth it.

The social media team was our backbone—announcements, posts, designs, keeping the buzz alive. Big thanks to Mansi (also our go-to content person), along with Md. Farid, Amit & Riddhima. And yep, that cool Build Tour logo you see up there? Amit designed it.

On the ground, Shashank, Kapil, and Shivam held things together—guiding students through technicalities, taking charge of arrangements, managing logistics, and even stepping in as resource persons when needed.

Aditya, Guneet, and Kripesh led as resource persons, bringing not only their WordPress expertise but also their effortless way of connecting with students. (Classic engineers with their own fanbase, haha!)

Mayur, Anshika, Pooja, Malay, Ninay, Roshini, and Prabal each contributed in various roles, adding strength to the endeavour.

The Sponsors who made this Possible

This tour wouldn’t have been possible the way it happened without our incredible sponsors. Gold Sponsors Jetpack, Bluehost, Woo, Hosting.com, Kinsta, StellarWP, and our Bronze Sponsor, ForthFocus.

Their support helped us take the Tour across campuses in the best way possible, provide refreshments and swags, and equip students with the right resources.

And of course, a big thanks to the global WordPress community for having our back throughout!

Some moments will stay with us forever:

After attending the marvellous WordCamp Asia in Philippines earlier this year, I honestly had no plans. That experience felt like a peak—and I was happy just soaking in its afterglow. Soon after came our WordPress Women’s Day event, followed by the WP Build Tour. I was caught in the rhythm of work and community efforts, and somewhere in between, I wrote about what community support means to me.

How WordPress Community Helps You: Scholarships, Grants & Support Programs

Out of nowhere, I heard whispers of WordCamp Pokhara (WCPokhara) 2025. And just like that, something stirred again. I had no plans—but this one felt like it had plans for me.

This marked my second international trip, right after WordCamp Asia, and what a ride it was! Hosted in the breathtaking lakeside city of Pokhara, Nepal—it didn’t feel like a formal event trip. It felt like a reunion of kindred spirits.

What Am I Doing Here?

Yes, that was literally the title of my talk.

As someone who calls herself a product of the WordPress community but ultimately I am an outsider in a community that’s primarily tech-driven, I felt a strong urge to voice that duality which comes both with its pros and cons. So when I had the privilege of being at both sides, why not support individuals who are in the midst too? My session was in the Macchapucchre hall at Pokhara Event Centre (remember the name till the end of this article!)*

I spoke about community, support, diversity, inclusion, and the unseen ways the community shapes us. It’s not just about us giving back—it’s also about acknowledging how much we’ve received. I also shared what we’ve been doing in the WordPress Bhopal community—because I believe growing a local community is directly tied to the broader mission of societal growth.

Many thanks to Yoast for generously supporting my journey to WCPokhara via its Yoast Diversity Fund.

Contributor Day — Where It Begins

Ever since I landed, I found myself looking for that sense of community everywhere but nah, not in my charts till the Camp. Day 1 kicked off with Contributor Day, buzzing with energy. I joined the Patterns team, and, like always, it felt grounding to sit across from passionate strangers-turned-collaborators and contribute to something bigger than ourselves. There also was a WordPress Basics workshop arranged, an energizing space for newcomers to begin their journey. Pretty thoughtful of the organisers in their scheme to build the next gen, it’s like acknowledging the younger population particularly and working for their need.

The numbers speak for themselves—678+ attendees, 35% women participation, and a speaker lineup filled mostly with women. We’re building a future that’s inclusive by default, and seeing it unfold in real-time was powerful.

What is worth mentioning? The students. So many of them! Curious minds, high on energy, and wide-eyed excitement. That is what community-building is—bridging the gap between where we are and where they want to go. WordPress gave us a platform; WordCamps like Pokhara make sure we pay it forward.

Faces Behind the Moments

WordPress events are rightly known for its networking opportunities, no doubt about it. Meeting Mumtahina Faguni and her lovely family, being introduced to Alina Kakshapati, crossing paths with Jyoti, Sapana, Prabeen, Regan, Utsav Dai, Ayush, Manjil, Sushant and so many more—each connection added a story to my journey. I clicked with Jyoti instantly, what started as a girls’ girl thing, led us to creating joyful nuisance as if we’d been best of friends for years— wonderwoman!

A long-overdue in-person meeting with Yam Chettri, who once mentored us at WP Bhopal, finally happened. And thanks to Subash Dai, I got a beautiful glimpse into his village and the landscapes beyond the Camp.

Everyone I met was so cordial, kind, and full of cheer, this is what makes WordPress more than software. It’s a movement.

Beyond the Camp

This was my first visit to Nepal, and I had the chance to explore both Kathmandu and Pokhara—each with its own flavour and stories.

We visited iconic places like Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath Stupa, Boudhanath, Fewa Lake, Devi’s Fall, and a very cloudy Sunrise Point in Pokhara (sadly, no sunrise or peek of the mountain, just dramatic clouds!). Special mention to their cars!

While Pashupatinath is a marvel in scale and significance, I couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed by its lack of upkeep. A site so historically rich and spiritually revered deserves more thoughtful maintenance. The contrast between its grandeur and the surrounding neglect was hard to ignore. It made me think about how we sometimes take our own heritage for granted, something I hope changes with time and awareness.

I also tried finding a Jain temple, there was only one in Kathmandu and none in Pokhara. I visited the one in Kathmandu during a layover, it was a two-storey building, housing both Digambar and Shwetambar shrines, one above the other. Simple, quiet, and tucked away.

Being a pure vegetarian, food was another small challenge. Compared to my experience in the Philippines, where chain restaurants were pretty thoughtful with food preferences, Nepal was trickier. For instance, I had to stop a server at my hotel from using the same tongs for non-veg and veg dishes, something that could easily go unnoticed. A small thing maybe, but for someone with my kind of dietary restrictions, it’s a big deal. My mum had insisted on packing some home-cooked food before the trip—and as always, mothers know best. Lesson learnt.

That said, we explored some great cafes too. My favourite was Pizza from Himalayan Java in Kathmandu. And next time, I‘m visit Utpala Café, run by monks. It’s on my wish list now.

When the Mountains Finally Whispered Hello

The mountains, I must say, were teasing us throughout the trip—playing hide and seek behind thick clouds and fog. We kept waiting, hoping, peeking out of windows and into skies, but Pokhara remained mostly overcast.

Then, just when we had almost given up—as we were leaving for the airport—there it was.

Annapurna. Machhapuchchhre.
Majestic. Serene. Suddenly visible like a blessing.

We spotted a glimpse from our hotel too and instantly went gaga—squealing like little kids seeing something we’d only heard about in stories. It felt like Pokhara had saved its most magical moment for the very end. A perfect, quiet farewell.

Why It Mattered

More than the schedule, the venue, or even the amazing sessions; WordCamps are about the people.

It’s the chai breaks, the impromptu laughter, the smiles exchanged between sessions that stay with you. The shared spirit of belonging. Pokhara reminded me of Bhopal in many ways, except for the mountains, of course.

This time, I wasn’t just carried by the community’s support, I felt ready to give back, to cheer others on, to help hold that space of warmth for someone else.

I didn’t go looking for a community this time. But by the end of it, I knew—I belong here.

Thank you, WordCamp Pokhara. You’ll always have a place in my heart.

Until we meet again. Lots of Maya!

Attending a flagship WordCamp, be it WordCamp Asia, US, or Europe, can feel like a dream. If you’ve ever experienced even a small or local WordCamp, you know how energizing and enriching these events can be. Multiply that by ten, and you begin to understand what a flagship feels like: overwhelming in the best way.

But for many of us, the path to attending one isn’t easy.

The truth is, flagship WordCamps can be hard to get to—not because of the ticket price (WordCamps are known for being affordable), but because of everything else: travel, accommodation, visas, time away from work or personal responsibilities, and so on. Many attendees are supported by their companies or organizations; some manage to make it on their own. And then, there are scholarships and sponsorships—lifelines that can make the difference between wishing and attending.

This blog post is a small effort to shed light on the many ways the WordPress community helps people show up.

Before I dive into the list, I want to take a moment to thank the individuals, companies, and community efforts that make it possible for folks (including me) to experience such splendid events. WordCamp Asia 2025 was a feeling, something that wouldn’t be possible for me to attend the way I did, without their support, and I’m deeply, wholeheartedly grateful. As someone who’s been supported, it’s part of my responsibility to pass it on, and one of the easiest ways to do that is by sharing a word.

Scholarships, Funds & Fellowships in the WordPress Ecosystem

If you’re an active contributor, prolly a first-timer, from an underrepresented group, speaking at a flagship maybe, or just someone who needs a little support to make attendance, keep reading. This is a list of programs, grants, and fellowships that may be helpful to you, available in the WP opensource space, not exhaustive, but pretty much covering the major ones. Not all will apply to everyone, and not all are available year-round, but the idea is to share what’s out there, so you can keep an eye out wherever relevant.

FLAGSHIP WORDCAMPS

DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP

Diversity Scholarship was initiated by WordPress Foundation to facilitate attendance in WCAsia 2023, and has now opened gates for WCEU & WCUS too. Given annually to one recipient each.

Eligibility:

Active contributor to the WordPress project

Have never attended a flagship WordCamp (Asia, US, or Europe)

Require financial assistance

Belong to an underrepresented group in open source

Covers: Event ticket, travel costs & accommodation for the event dates. Mostly they’d help you book the same or reimburse in certain cases.

Attending WordCamp Asia as a Diversity Scholarship Recipient

A First for Everything

WordCamp Asia 2025 was held in Manila, Philippines, from February 20-22, marking my very first flagship WordCamp and my first international trip. For me, this experience was surreal—one for the books! I’ve spoken about WCAsia so much, to so many people, yet it always feels like it was worth even more. Everyone should experience something like this at least once.

I kept delaying this recap, trying to make it perfect, only to realize that it wasn’t quite possible. WordCamp Asia was an experience, deeply rooted in my heart yet so difficult to capture in words (or even in pictures). Beautiful, serene, overwhelming, exhilarating, and full of warmth, this event redefined my standards for conferences and, more importantly, for community—welcoming, inclusive, and just right.

The Journey to Manila

This trip was significant for many reasons, but mostly because I was emceeing for the first time at a flagship event. Although I received the Diversity Scholarship for WCAsia 2024, I couldn’t attend, making this year’s opportunity even more special.

But from visa applications to solo travel to finally making it there, it was a journey in itself! For Indian residents, the Philippines offers an eVisa option, making the process fairly accessible.

If you’re looking for a guide on how to apply for a Philippines visa, check out my separate blog post here.

Visa was sorted, I flew to Mumbai first and had a friend bring Mumbai’s ultimate—Vada Pav before we flew to Manila. Being a vegetarian, food was one of my biggest concerns, and little did I know how much of a topsy-turvy journey I’d have to go further on.

Staying at Conrad Manila: Hospitality at Its Finest

After changing 3 flights and travelling for a full 24 hours, we landed in Manila! Literally kept myself up on lemon water throughout. The first thing that caught my eye was their beautiful cars! And then, we headed to the stunning Conrad Manila!

My standards for hospitality are set & shaped by the Tatas. In the Philippines, I stayed at Conrad, a Hilton property, and this became the only property that could come anywhere near the Taj. Mindful housekeeping, accommodating receptionists, and thoughtful longue staff— The level of hospitality I received made my stay so much more enjoyable and made me feel at home. Mindful hospitality goes a long way!

Filipinos, in general, are incredibly kind and accommodating—even the cab drivers!

Coming to food, considering its geography, Filipino cuisine revolves around seafood and poultry, making it tricky for vegetarians to navigate and find something without eggs, if alone meat. There may be hidden ingredients like fish or shrimp flakes, oyster sauce, chicken oil, rennet cheese, etc. And since rennet is banned in India, but not outside the Parmesan is different too. Fruits can be your best friends on such trips for real. Having done a lot of research, I was particular about my food throughout.

At Conrad, my only option on Day 1 was gluten bread. I shared my concern later that day, and starting Day 2, Chef Becca personally took charge of my meals, ensuring I had a variety of vegetarian options every morning. She even brought out a cheese platter at one point to verify the ingredients haha.

What is a WordCamp & Why is WCAsia special?

WordCamps are the flagship event(s) of WordPress, a software covering around 43% of websites around the globe. Primarily a tech conference, they are known for their diverse community and global outreach through local communities. They bring together enthusiasts, developers, designers, bloggers, business owners, etc to learn, network, and contribute. They hold global significance as hubs of innovation and collaboration within the WordPress community. They’re organised by local communities as well as global communities. The Global community organises three flagships WordCamps, these are continent-level Camps: WordCamp Europe, WordCamp US & WordCamp Asia.

WordCamp Asia 2025: The Main Event

Over 1,400 attendees from 71 countries gathered at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), with nearly 15,000 joining online. The event started with Contributor Day, followed by two days of insightful talks, panels, workshops, and networking opportunities.

As for me, the networking began right on the flight, my seatmate turned out to be headed to the Camp too and was an Indian (didn’t seem like prima facie though). The serendipity of it all set the tone for what was to come.

Contributor Day: Giving Back to the Community

WordCamp Asia kicked off with an incredible Contributor Day, with almost 800 contributors, many first-timers, coming together to collaborate and give back to WordPress. Guided by 37 table leads and 16 experts from the Human Library, participants engaged in meaningful discussions and tackled important tasks, reinforcing the open-source spirit of WordPress.

Post-Contributor Day, we headed to Social Night at Baluarte San Diego which had a cute setup for dinner for the speakers, sponsors, volunteers & organisers; followed by Elementor and Hostinger’s Manila Mingle Party.

Conference Highlights

The first full conference day began with opening remarks reflecting on WordCamp Asia’s journey, tracing back to the first Southeast Asian WordCamp in Manila in 2008. The excitement peaked with an inspiring keynote by Gutenberg Lead Architect Matías Ventura on the future of Gutenberg and WordPress. I’ve been a fan of Gutenberg for almost a decade since I started blogging.

After-Hours Networking & Parties

The heart of a flagship WordCamp lies in networking and the crazy parties. People do island hopping in the Philippines, I found myself party-hopping instead.

The night continued with parties hosted by WooCommerce and Verisign. Gustė from Hostinger was really kind to invite me to their private dinner. This was followed by an impromptu plan with WPMU DEV’s- they’re so cool! The nightlife was something I’d never experienced—at 5 AM, the city of Manila was still alive, lights twinkling, and people socializing over at McD as if it were early evening! A city that never sleeps, witnessed, lived.

The Grand Finale & A Special Announcement

While I was packing for Asia I had this thought to do something Indian for once. Of course, I was to represent my country. Somewhere at the back of my mind, I considered wearing a saree. I was skeptical, but I packed one anyway, just in case I felt confident enough. So it was the final day of the conference and the final chance of me wearing it. Thanks to friends who motivated me further. It wasn’t the easiest choice, but it was absolutely thrilling! Loved every bit of it being noticed and appreciated by the global folks, right from the hotel staff to our neighbours, extending to the West, it was crazy.

Honestly, I’d been at the sponsor area throughout this day. There were so many raffles, it was all buzzing with energy. I spoke to so many people!

The Best Moment?

The announcement of WordCamp Asia 2026!

The excitement was palpable. After so much anticipation, countless rumours, and endless debates, the moment finally arrived—WordCamp Asia is coming to India in 2026! For the Indian WordPress community, this was nothing short of a full-circle moment.

To wrap it all up, the last party was at PICC itself: the After Party!

A special note of thanks to the incredible organizing team — putting together an event of this magnitude is no small feat. From coordinating speaker logistics to ensuring smooth operations across multiple tracks, their dedication truly shone through. Every detail was thoughtfully taken care of — whether it was the assistance with special immigration lines, the shuttle buses for our convenience, or the constant on-ground support, everything was impeccably managed. Kudos to the team for pulling off such a well-organized and heartwarming event. Your hard work is deeply appreciated!

The People, Always the People!

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it every single time—WordCamp has always felt like a big family reunion, even if you’re meeting people for the first time. It’s always about the people. I wanted to stay longer, explore more, talk more (even if it meant a sore throat!) and experience more of the country, but perhaps that’s for another time.

In all of this, how incomplete would it be to not mention the wonderful folks I got to meet—Michelle, Gustė from Hostinger, Samah from Yoast, Viktoria & Conodor from Kinsta, Devin, Hari Shanker, Tim, Eva, Arjay, Chiaki, Nirmal, Shubham, Krupa, Himal, Anooja & Vinod from Flexicloud, Napaphat, Vedanshu, Aurelio, Loana. The list is definitely longer… sorry if I’ve missed someone: you’re remembered with a smile nonetheless!

And then, there was the big, vibrant Indian contingent—some familiar faces, some new—and all adding to the warmth.

I’m a people person. My energy depends upon the people. And even as I write this, I know words will never fully capture what this experience meant to me. Some knew of my presence there; a majority did not. The ones I knew helped me connect with those I didn’t. But there were also those who came by without knowing me—just a smile or a kind word away, reminding me how simple yet profound human connections can be.

I’d recommend anyone to experience this community at least once!

Thank you, WordCamp Asia, for the memories, the friendships, and the inspiration. Here’s to many more moments like these!

To the Philippines—Salamat Po! And to the WordPress community—Mahal Kita!

My heart is full of joy and gratitude as I write this blog post. We just concluded EmpowerWP Bhopal 2025, an event to celebrate & bring more into the ambit of #Womenintech, and what an absolute triumph it was! If you’re following my website, you’ll know how excited I was when I announced EmpowerWP Bhopal 2025 (Read here).

Women In Tech

Some moments in life leave an indelible mark on our hearts, and for me, EmpowerWP Bhopal 2025 was one of them. As the lead organizer, I had envisioned an event that brings a positive change to remember, in lives of people around us, in the society and not just in the community. And what an incredible experience it has been!

A Vision-Turned Reality

As part of the global WordPress initiative, WP Bhopal organised EmpowerWP to commemorate International Women’s Day 2025 on the 9th of March. What began as an ambitious goal turned into a milestone moment, proving the power of representation, inclusion, and collective support.

For me, this wasn’t just another event. It was about giving back to the community that shaped my WP journey. I started my WordPress blog in 2016, encouraged by my brother. I joined the community almost three years back because of my love for community spirit, and here, my vision and goal have been to bridge the gap that stood between the fields of law and tech. Over time, mentors and friends in the community helped me grow. And that’s when I came across the concept of WomenInWordPress!

I’m a huge believer in leaving a place better than I found it. So, I always try to make small tweaks here and there in all organizations, events, and programs I’m part of, to amplify the impact and make something useful out of it. And this event sounded like a perfect opportunity (again).

I was introduced to the idea of #WomenInWordPress at WordCamp Bhopal 2023. But the purpose became clear only when the low ratio of women attendees in the meetups became a constant. This event was important for several reasons, one of the major reasons globally was to bring in as many women in the radar as possible, to get them involved and change the already deteriorating state of women participation in the community & STEM in general.

For the first time in our chapter’s decade-long journey, we hosted a meetup with a female-majority audience. Going with the idea that empowerment doesn’t happen in isolation, we made this a woman-majority event. The point is that if we want women to upskill themselves, help & empower their own kind, it is also for men to support in whatever capacity they can and make space. It is also about them showing and reflecting that they are there, and therefore, the event attendees were divided into two categories: women and allies. It’s about uplifting society and making it empowered in the truest sense. And we’re so thankful we stuck with that.

Challenging Norms and Expanding Inclusion

I now certainly understand why the rest of the communities preferred a women-only event. The problem is how the world views things, how understood things are. How overshadowed you and your efforts can be. And therefore sometimes it is about showing the world that you can and you have done something on your own, without others paving a way or extending help. But alright, I do not regret the decision we made here for this event just yet.

Secondly, these events are limited to targeting students & professionals. But when we envisioned EmpowerWP Bhopal, we knew it had to be inclusive—not just for the conventional attendees but also for the very women who have shaped our lives. We wanted to utilize this opportunity to actually make a difference—not just for women already involved in WordPress but for those somewhat left behind from the active workforce due to family, societal pressure, or other reasons. Our goal was to introduce them to digital opportunities, help them upskill, and connect them to a supportive network. So we decided to target homemakers with untapped potential, women on career breaks looking to upskill, small business owners who had yet to digitalise. The idea was to bring digital revolution home.

Execution: Bridging the Gap

Targeting this group required a different approach. Many of these women needed reassurance and encouragement. Our team curated learning videos and motivational messages from tech professionals (special thanks to Michelle & Krupa) as part of a dedicated social media campaign. We reached out via WhatsApp and Facebook, where these women were more active. With the support of the WP Bhopal community, we created a space where diversity thrived and new voices found confidence.

Even then, we were uncertain if we could achieve our ambitious goals. But the response exceeded our expectations—106 registrations and 70+ attendees on event day. The diversity in the room was incredible: students, entrepreneurs, journalists, homemakers, designers, freelancers, and social activists. Our youngest attendee? A 5th-grade schoolgirl! That’s when we knew a difference had been made.

EmpowerWP in Action

The event was designed as a full day of learning, inspiration, and contribution. We started with a fun ice-breaking activity where all the attendee were asked to define ’empowerment’, and it was nice to gather all perspectives before we begun.

We had four technical sessions covering marketing, AI, WordPress, and design, by Nikita Varma, Purva Kushwah, Poonam Namdev, & Saloni Rathore respectively.

This was followed by a Contributor Hour, where attendees were guided to make their first contributions to Make WordPress—most as first-time contributors to the Photos and Translation teams. As sources tell us, more than 15 first time contributions were made that day.

We also hosted a panel discussion titled Learners to Leaders, featuring Parul Shrivastava, a marketing CEO, Arshi Khan, a startup founder leveraging social media, and Manisha Lakhwani, a freelancer. They shared personal experiences, career journeys, and practical guidance.

Before ending, we did a community talk: because at the end of the day, awareness is what matters— What they can do for the community & what the community can do for them. The attendees were informed about the current schemes available and how they can benefit from them by becoming an active member of the WP Community.

Additionally, every attendee’s ID card contained a link to a curated resources page, ensuring at whatever stage of their journey they are at, they could continue learning even after the event.

To ensure accessibility, the event was conducted primarily in Hindi, along with English.

Challenges and Triumphs

Gathering speakers was no easy task. As one of our panelists rightly said, “We need to be comfortable in our own skin. We need to believe that what we do is worth sharing.” Thanks to the WP Bhopal community’s encouragement, we were able to host an all-women speaker lineup!

It was inspiring to witness women from diverse domains, backgrounds, and experiences come together under one roof with a shared intent—to support, uplift, and empower each other.

Know more about our speakers here.

The event ended on a perfect note—with a networking dinner at Raasta Cafe, as India played in the Champions Trophy 2025 final. India won, and so did we!

None of this would have been possible without the incredible people who believed in us. To our speakers, volunteers, and attendees—thank you for making this event meaningful. Every role mattered, and this success belongs to each one of you.

A huge shoutout to our sponsors—Jetpack, A2 Hosting, WooCommerce, Bluehost, Hostinger, Kinsta, SEOPress, and CreedAlly—for standing with us and making this dream a reality. Bluehost & Jetpack’s swags were a hit with attendees and organizers alike!

It was also wonderful to meet the faces behind few of these companies—Guste, Viktoria, Samah, Ritu—thank you for your support! I look forward to meeting you all again soon.

Having led numerous teams and been part of even more, I know how rare it is to find a team that not only shares your vision but also takes ownership of it. Each one of them was diligent in their roles, but what stood out was how seamlessly they managed everything on the event day, without needing my intervention. This may seem simple, but it’s anything but. People often stick to what they are asked to do, rarely taking initiative on their own. Yet, this team did just that, going above and beyond in ways I hadn’t even anticipated. I’m incredibly grateful to have worked alongside such an amazing bunch of people.

A special thanks to Pooja Derashri for taking the lead on a global level, Juan for preliminary checks, and Yogesh, our mentor.

The countdown to International Women’s Day 2025 has begun, and I couldn’t be happier to announce EmpowerWP Bhopal 2025! This isn’t just another event, but a movement, a revolution in its own right. A women-led initiative dedicated to celebrating, inspiring, and empowering women, EmpowerWP is our step toward bridging the gap and bringing more women into the digital space.

Women have played an immeasurable role in shaping our lives: nurturing, supporting, and sacrificing. Many have put their own aspirations on hold, prioritizing families and responsibilities over personal growth. But now, it’s time to give back. It’s time to foster independence, and empowerment, and equip women with the tools they need to thrive in today’s fast-evolving digital world.

And what better way to do so than by contributing to a cause that has the power to make a real difference?

Why EmpowerWP?

The digital world holds immense opportunities, yet so many women hesitate to step in, not due to a lack of capability, but often due to a lack of encouragement or awareness of where to start. It is the perception that tech is too complicated, too technical, or just “not for them.” But tech isn’t just coding! It’s about using digital tools to create, communicate, and build something meaningful.

And it’s time we stop feeling intimidated by technology. The internet isn’t just for scrolling Facebook and YouTube. It’s a world of possibilities waiting to be explored, blogging, content creation, freelancing, running an online business. The opportunities are endless, and EmpowerWP is here to show the way.

And we know language can be a barrier too. That’s why EmpowerWP will embrace both Hindi and English so that everyone can learn and grow comfortably.

Who is EmpowerWP For?

EmpowerWP is not just for students or professionals. It’s for every woman who dreams of establishing something of their own. Stepping into the digital world is just a way for that. Age or background is no bar. This event is dedicated to:

Women on career breaks looking to restart their professional journeys.

Homemakers with untapped potential, ready to explore opportunities.

Small business owners who want to embrace digital transformation.

After organizing an enthralling WordCamp last year, the WordPress Bhopal community decided to take a big step this year by organizing the first-ever do_action charity hackathon in our city. Up until now, do_action events in India have only been held in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. But we thought, why not have a chapter here that goes by do_action Bhopal? And so, we did!

What is do_action?

do_action is a charity hackathon where volunteers come together to build websites for NGOs/NPOs that need an online presence. Volunteers sign up to join build teams, and the websites are created from scratch within a day. Since it is charity, everything is sponsored—from the venue to the domain and hosting to other requisites. The goal is simple: expand their reach and visibility while contributing to their cause.

We were fortunate to get the support of yo_work India for the venue and WPMU DEV‘s domain and hosting, along with contributions from Sajid Ansari, Aditya Shah, Kapil Arya, and SOL Hosting. Their contributions made it possible for us to focus on building impactful websites without worrying about resources.

For do_action Bhopal’s first edition, a total of five organisations were onboarded (translated to five projects). I was heading a project myself, hence Project Manager (PM)!

Day in my life as a PM at do_action Bhopal

As a project manager, my role was to guide the team working on a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO)- a temple particularly. For ease, I had already created a detailed plan for the website before the event, sketching it out on paper with all the requirements and features, like a donation page, an event calendar, a photo gallery, maps, etc. Only if building the website was as easy as it was to pen things down on paper but this pre-planning did help set a direction.

On the day of the event, volunteers gathered at the beautiful space owned by yo_work. While we managed to get the NPO’s site live by the end of the day, I personally wasn’t entirely satisfied with the result. It felt like it didn’t fully mirror the organisation.

After the event, we decided to continue working pro bono and build a more polished version of the website. This time, we took a week to perfect it, adding all the necessary features, some of which are mentioned below.

The temple was built singlehandedly by a lady who passed away a few years ago, and as a special tribute, we added a dedicated section in her memory on the website. It felt like a fitting way to honor her contribution, and of course, gave the entire project a deeper meaning.

One of the primary challenges was that they had no online presence—a Google search didn’t even bring them up. We fixed that by creating a Google Maps profile and embedding it into the site. We also included nearby similar organisations for easy reference.

The website now includes a small gallery featuring images of the temple’s various events, which was particularly important because the organisation usually spreads the word through word of mouth.

To make things more interactive, we added a social media feed that automatically pulls any mentions of the temple from platforms like Instagram or YouTube.

Not everyone gets to hear about their upcoming events, so we added an event calendar that can be updated by the site admin, making it easier to keep people informed.

We even added a notification bar on the homepage to highlight key contributions or upcoming events, which will help draw attention to important updates.

Last but not the least, a donation page was set up to help them receive contributions, which is essential for their work. It was personalised and kind of fun to build.

What makes this even more significant is that the organisation has typically relied on WhatsApp groups for sharing event details and payment receipts. Now, with this website, they have a centralised system for communication, event planning, and outreach.

While I’ve worked with Gutenberg before, this was the first time I managed a full project from ideation to execution for a third party. I enjoyed the process, from picking the color themes, figuring out the layout, to which plugin to use and other howabouts. Indeed there were some challenges along the way, but had Aditya’s pro backing if and when I got stuck. I’m glad I could be part of this entire journey, and I’m thrilled that the final website turned out to be useful for the organisation- they were so happy to know about it.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, being part of do_action Bhopal 2024 was an incredible experience. Collectively, we managed to create impactful websites for five NGOs, helping them improve their online presence and reach more people. For me, this was more than just a project—it was an opportunity to contribute to a cause I care about while also learning and growing in the process.

A huge thank you to the WordPress Bhopal community, our sponsors, and all the dedicated volunteers who made this event a success. I’m excited to see the impact these websites will have on the missions of these wonderful organisations.

Here’s to making a difference together!

Recently, the GDG (Google Developers Group) Cloud Bhopal organized its flagship event, Cloud Community Days 2024, in Bhopal. This marked the third consecutive edition of the event, and I’ve had the privilege of being a part of each one—first as an attendee, then as a volunteer, and now, as a speaker! Looking back at this journey, it’s been quite an enriching and fulfilling experience.

Stepping into the Speaker Role

This year, I had the opportunity to speak on a subject I’m deeply interested in—privacy and data protection, specifically aligning with the Digital India mission. As someone who’s always been eager to bridge the worlds of law and technology, this event presented a perfect platform to explore these synergies.

The event, held at LNCT University, saw a meaningful conversation unfold, and I was thrilled to contribute my part to it. My session focused on the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, a crucial law that impacts individuals and entities working in the cloud or providing related services. Yet, despite its importance, I’ve noticed that much of the information about the acts & policies remains underrepresented, especially among stakeholders in the tech community.

Sharing Knowledge and Building Connections

One thing that always fascinated me, even as a child, was how some people just seemed to know so much about different topics. Now, as an adult, I still find myself intrigued by how informed and updated everyone around me seems to be.

This time, however, something changed. I found myself on the other side of that dynamic—sharing knowledge rather than absorbing it. It was humbling to realize that my insights could actually add value to someone else’s understanding. I noticed a common thread—many people are genuinely curious and want to learn, but they often don’t have access to the right information, even if it directly affects them.

That’s what makes opportunities like this so important. Speaking at Cloud Community Days allowed me to bridge that gap and help others gain a clearer understanding of the laws that could shape their professional lives.

Tech and Sustainability Go Hand-in-Hand

What makes Cloud Community Days even more special is its focus on sustainability. This year, the event embraced eco-friendly practices, and as a token of gratitude, the organizers gifted me a thoughtful jute pouch containing seed balls, along with a shield. The emphasis on sustainability aligns perfectly with the event’s mission of driving positive change—not just in tech, but in the way we interact with the environment.

A Stellar Lineup of Speakers

It was an absolute honor to share the stage with such a remarkable lineup of speakers, many of whom are Google Developer Experts (GDEs):

Ankit Sharma shared his expertise in building modern web apps with Angular & Firebase, providing valuable insights into streamlining app development while providing practical examples.

Ashok Vishwakarma gave an excellent session on Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) with Gemma, explaining the integration of LLMs in practical settings.

Arjun Vijayvargiya wowed the audience with his talk on Gemini Code Assist, showcasing the evolution of technology in simplifying coding processes.

Ashutosh Bhakare took a deep dive into Google Kubernetes Engine, offering a comprehensive overview of cloud-native solutions.

Each speaker brought their unique perspective, highlighting the rapid advancements happening in the tech space. Being a no-dev, non-tech individual, most of this was new to me, but I think I’ve started embracing this newness it brings.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the event organizers. A heartfelt thank you to Mayur Rathi and Aditya Shah for their unwavering support and for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

Cloud Community Days is the flagship event of GDG Cloud, and I’m beyond thrilled to congratulate the entire team on another successful edition.

It’s always a responsibility to share thoughts on stage, but it’s a responsibility that comes with a great sense of fulfilment. I’m excited to see how this journey unfolds further and how I can continue contributing to the intersections of law, technology, and policy. The power of community indeed knows no bounds.

WordCamp Asia 2024 recently unfolded its magic in Taipei, Taiwan, from March 7th to 9th, and what an extraordinary show it was! As the first flagship WordCamp in Asia, it brought together approximately 2,000 WordPress enthusiasts from 70+ countries at the Taipei International Convention Center. This edition marked the second innings of #WCAsia, following the first in Thailand in 2023.

Having previously been part of WordCamp Bhopal and WordCamp Mumbai in various capacities, I applied for the WordCamp Asia 2024 Diversity Scholarship and emceeing roles. To my delight, both applications were accepted, and I found myself on the brink of attending my first international event outside my home country and, of course, my first WordCamp Asia.

However, just before the event, life threw an unexpected curveball my way. An unfortunate accident meant I couldn’t be physically present at WordCamp Asia 2024. It was a moment of profound disappointment as I had geared up to be part of this global WordPress celebration. Despite my absence, I remained connected to the event’s pulse, eagerly soaking in updates and experiences shared by attendees & organizers. Social Media was buzzing with excitement & thrill!

As the sole international recipient of the WordCamp Asia 2024 Diversity Scholarship, I was generously offered sponsorship for my travel expenses, accommodation in Taipei, and the event ticket. This scholarship not only recognized the diversity I brought to the WordPress community but also was a gesture that resonated with the inclusive spirit of WordCamps.

As WordCamp Asia 2025 is slated to take place in Manila, Philippines, I find myself hopeful and determined to be part of the next chapter. The missed opportunity in Taipei only fueled my desire to embrace the WordPress community on an international stage. The enthusiasm, knowledge sharing, and connections fostered at WordCamps are unparalleled, and I look forward to experiencing it firsthand.

WordCamp Asia 2024 may not have been in the cards for me physically, but the journey was nonetheless significant. The WordPress community’s support, even in moments of setback, reinforces the true essence of these events. As I reflect on this missed adventure, I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way and eagerly anticipate the next chapter in the WordCamp saga.

The De-notified, Nomadic, and Semi-Nomadic Tribes are the most side-lined, vulnerable, economically and socially deprived communities in the Indian subcontinent. De-notified Tribes are various tribal groups or aboriginal communities who were notified as ‘born criminals’ under British rule in India. Women within the community can be termed as the ‘Vulnerable within Vulnerable’ section of society as they face extreme deprivation of basic resources such as identity documents, shelter, sanitation, education, support, workplace safety, and basic sexual and reproductive rights. They continue to experience social prejudice and difficulties in accessing education, employment, and justice. Many found themselves trapped in a cycle of becoming habitual offenders due to their previous records or lack of viable alternatives. The flawed assumption of criminality being hereditary, which served as a basis for the 1871 Act, further perpetuated discrimination and hindered the progress of de-notified tribes.

About the Conference

The National Commission for Women in collaboration with RACE Lab organised a regional seminar on ‘Challenges Faced by Women of Denotified Tribes’ in July 2023 at RCVP Noronha Academy, Bhopal. Dr. Veerendra Mishra (Director, RACE Lab) highlighting the need for such a discussion, emphasized that despite global developments, women and children often remain the most vulnerable and impacted in society. The ultimate objective of this event was set to be a fruitful endeavor, aiming to shed light on the challenges faced by women of the Denotified Tribe and pave the way for sustainable solutions.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Shri Mangubhai Patel, the Hon’ble Governor of Madhya Pradesh. Accompanying him were Ms. Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of the NCW; IAS Shri Ashok Barnwal, Secretary of the Denotified, Nomadic, & Semi-Nomadic Welfare Department, and Rt. IPS Shri Rajiv Kumar Tandon, Member of the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission. Resource persons for the technical session(s) included Dr. Mukesh Kumar Mishra; Dr. Surbhi Dayal; Dr. Dharmendra Pare, Director of Janjatiya Lok Kala Academy, Tribal Museum, Bhopal; Dr. Pragati Dubey, Asst. Prof. & Dep. Registrar, National Institute of Mental Rehabilitation, Sehore; Ms. Vidya Venkatesh; & Dr. Deepti Sudip Kotasthane, the Dep. Director of the Denotified, Nomadic & Semi-nomadic Welfare Department, Madhya Pradesh.

As a designated rapporteur, the event unfolded as more than an academic gathering – it was an eye-opener for me. The breadth and depth of issues faced by Denotified Tribes were revealed, challenging preconceived notions. It was not even the tip of an iceberg that we as students of law were previously aware of, the seminar shattered pre-existing awareness, leaving participants with a profound understanding of the intricacies involved.

The discussion unfurled

Wide arrays of discussion leveled up the cause- where experts dwelled from history to legal to mental health to the ground reality of the DNT tribals. Even though they were de-notified from the tag of being “born criminals,” post-independence, the taboo of being an ex-criminal tribe still haunts them.

Historical connotation

During colonial India, indigenous cultural dances that were participatory and communal were criminalized by the colonizers, who imposed their own standards of performance and morality. For instance, the proposed Dramatic Performance Act aimed to ban or censor any performative activities and dance forms that challenged colonial authority or expressed dissent. This exemplified how legal frameworks could influence societal views, turning once-accepted cultural practices into perceived criminal activities.

Going back to the root cause of this issue, nearly 200 such communities were criminalized under an unjust legislation called the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871. The reason for such criminalization was the refusal to reduce their cultural integrity to meet British demands. This criminalization had lasting consequences on these communities, leading to their marginalization and stigmatization.

There is nothing called criminality. It is a concept that emerged from a study which stated that criminality gets into the genes and that it is transmitted hereditary. Which is not scientifically accurate. We need to change our mindsets.

Dr. Veerendra Mishra, IPS

Ground reality

Generation after generation, DNTs continue to lead impoverished lives surrounded by hardships, uncertainties, and insecure futures. Women here are faced with aggravated situations where many of them resort to the entertainment industry and other risky occupations to seek a livelihood. Kanjars for instance, have been historically known for tracing genealogy and engaging in various occupations like dancing, singing, and dealing with terracotta, also practicing sex work as a side business. However, during the British era, draconian legislation deprived them of their traditional jobs, pushing them towards sex work. Today, they are exempted from the Immoral Trafficking Act as they continue their traditional practices, but that’s a reality only in writing.

DNTs are deprived of even the most basic facilities and critical components of social security and health conditions. A situation of life without shelter & basic livelihood makes an individual susceptible to various health problems in their living environment. Further, the unfavorable and unhygienic living condition makes them more vulnerable to various health issues and abuse- verbal, mental, physical, and sexual.

Adding to the hardship is the non-availability of statistics and literature about the DNTs. The existing information has over the years highlighted issues such as lack of basic infrastructure/housing, risks associated with employment, poor educational attainment, continued arbitrary criminalization, poor possession of official documents leading to a crisis of their identity and citizenship, poor access towards accountable government structures, entitlements, welfare measures, and policies. Highlighting a significant barrier, it came to light that 269 communities fall outside the ambit of any reserved community, leading to a lack of access to government schemes and related benefits. The absence of residential proof hinders them from obtaining essential identification documents like Aadhar cards, which further marginalizes them.

Tribals from DNT, if found near crime scenes are often unfairly targeted without substantial evidence. All of them highlight the deep social, political, and administrative injustices faced by these communities. However, no literature connects these to the impact on the lives & experiences of women alone.

I also think that the De-notified Tribes, they all have some or the other artistic specialization, which if used properly, would be better for them as well as for the upliftment of the society.

Dr. Dharmendra Pare, Director of Janjatiya Lok Kala Academy, Tribal Museum, Bhopal

Most of these tribes used forests and grazing lands for their livelihood and residential use and had “strong ecological connections.” Many of them are dependent upon various types of natural resources and carve out intricate ecological niches for their survival. The changes in ecology and environment seriously affect their livelihood options.

In the quiet corners of our society, hidden beneath the shadows, reside tribes like Pardhi and Revadi. Despite their extraordinary talent and knowledge, they dwell off the radar of upliftment and societal justice. A few schemes like the Kaushal Vikas Yojana & Swarozgar Yojana have been implemented by the government to develop their skilling according to industrial standards. However effective implementation remains a challenge. By fostering a more inclusive and compassionate approach, it is possible to uplift these communities and ensure their rightful place in society. NGOs & other stakeholders should take the lead in designing policies & programs that understand & respect the culture and psychology of these tribes, building opportunities for education, employment & empowerment.

However, gathering information about these tribes presents a colossal challenge. Living on the outskirts, restrained by stigma and fear, they remain secluded, with inaccurate & inconsistent official records, their count ambiguous. The urgent need for a uniform caste-based census for separate targeted data, ease in executive procedures, and inclusive education initiatives are among the few recommendations emphasized to integrate them into the broader fabric of society.

Building an empathetic and inclusive society, where education empowers de-notified tribes and their women, is our collective responsibility for a better and more equitable future.

Shri Mangubhai Chhagganbhai Patel, Hon’ble Governor, State of Madhya Pradesh

The seminar concluded on the point that a fresh approach is the requirement of the hour. One that is not limited to bureaucratic records but focuses on efficient execution to uplift the significant population of women and children in denotified tribes, ensuring a better and more inclusive future for them. The awakening sparked by the seminar is the first step. Now, armed with awareness & sensitization, it’s time for individuals like you and me to wield our literacy, position, and privilege for the betterment of others. For in awareness lies the catalyst for change, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure a better and more inclusive future for these resilient communities.
